New Weekly Quiz

February 24, 2026

Hi everyone,

Weโ€™re excited to officially launch our brand-new online quiz experience โ€” Beat The Points โ€” kicking off this Thursday at 8:30pm.

This isnโ€™t just another quiz. This is a strategic tug-of-war where every second, and every decision, matters.

๐Ÿ”ต How Beat The Points Works

  • 75 Questions
  • Every question starts at 10 points
  • Points decrease as the countdown clock runs
  • The faster you lock in, the more you win
  • But hereโ€™s the catch:
  • Whatever value you lock inโ€ฆ is the value you either win or lose

Get it right? You gain those points.

Get it wrong? You lose those exact points.

And remember our golden rule:

Itโ€™s far better to give no answer at all than to give a wrong answer.

โฑ Question Formats & Timers

  • Multiple Choice โ€“ 15 seconds
  • Open-Ended / Numbers โ€“ 30 seconds
  • Sequence Questions โ€“ 30 seconds
  • Occasionally, the host may adjust time limits in the interest of fairness.

Correct spelling is essential. When a full name is required, we need the full name. No half answers. No surnames only. Accuracy matters.

๐ŸŽฏ The Point Wager

The final question in each round introduces the ultimate risk-reward decision:

You may wager some โ€” or all โ€” of your accumulated points on the final question.

Answer correctly and you double your wager.

Answer incorrectly and those points are gone.

Thatโ€™s why itโ€™s called Beat The Points.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Entry & Prize Structure

  • Round One: Completely FREE
  • After Round One: โ‚ฌ5 to continue
  • Reach or exceed 500 points to unlock the cash prize
  • Week One Prize: โ‚ฌ100

Even better โ€” 50% of total entry fees roll over weekly in a snowball effect until a team beats the 500-point threshold.

๐Ÿง  Built for Fair Play

This quiz has been carefully designed for online competition, with timed scoring and safeguards to minimise unfair advantage.

Weโ€™ve also introduced a new feature allowing you to submit feedback or query a question directly to the quizmaster at any time. We are always open to improvement and transparency.

๐Ÿ‘ A Special Mention

A big well done to Eoin Jackson, who has stepped in as Quiz Master at The Cove Bar every Monday night.

He has done a fantastic job hosting the last few quizzes and keeping the slot running smoothly while Roddie prepares to return. We appreciate the energy, professionalism, and consistency heโ€™s brought to the role.

Help us spread the word.

Invite your friends. Challenge your colleagues.

Join us every Thursday at 8:30pm and see if you can truly Beat The Points.

See you online,

10 Tips to Win Your Next Pub Quiz Night

February 18, 2026

Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned quiz veteran, winning a pub quiz takes more than just knowing random facts. Here are our top 10 tips from years of running quiz nights across Ireland.

1. Build a Balanced Team

The best quiz teams aren't just full of 'smart' people โ€” they're balanced. You want someone strong on sports, someone who knows their pop culture, a science brain, and ideally someone obsessed with geography. A team of 4โ€“6 is the sweet spot.

2. Don't Second-Guess Yourself

Your first instinct is usually right. Studies show that changing your answer actually reduces your score more often than not. Trust your gut, especially on general knowledge questions.

3. Use Your Joker Wisely

Most quiz formats give you a joker round where your points are doubled. Use it on the category your team is strongest in โ€” not the one you think will be easiest.

4. Write Clearly

Many teams lose marks simply because the quizmaster can't read the answer. Write legibly, and if in doubt, print it.

5. Eliminate Wrong Answers First

On multiple-choice rounds, narrow it down by crossing out what you know is wrong. It's much easier to pick from two options than four.

6. Pay Attention to Exact Wording

Quiz questions are precise. 'Which country' is different from 'which city'. Read every word carefully before answering.

7. Manage Your Team's Discussion

Designate one person to write the final answer to avoid last-minute confusion or two people writing different things.

8. Stay Calm Under Pressure

Time pressure causes mistakes. Breathe, discuss calmly, and remember โ€” even the top teams don't know everything.

9. Learn From Each Round

After the answers are revealed, listen carefully. You'll be surprised how often the same trivia pops up in future quizzes.

10. Have Fun

The teams that enjoy the process tend to perform better. Laughter reduces stress and keeps the brain sharp. A relaxed team is a winning team.

The Ultimate Guide to Pub Quiz Handicap Scoring

February 12, 2026

If you've been attending Live Quizzing events, you've likely noticed our handicap scoring system. It's one of the things that makes our league unique โ€” and fairer for everyone. Here's a full breakdown of how it works and why it levels the playing field.

What is a Handicap in Pub Quiz?

A handicap system is designed to give every team โ€” from beginners to champions โ€” a genuine chance of winning the league. The more often a team wins, the more of a handicap they receive, which means they need to score higher to claim the top spot.

How Does Live Quizzing Calculate Handicaps?

Our handicap is based on the number of first-place finishes a team has accumulated over the season. The more wins you rack up, the higher your handicap modifier. This keeps the competition fresh and stops one dominant team from running away with the title week after week.

Why Handicap Scoring Is Great for Pub Quizzes

Traditional scoring often means the same teams win every week, which can be discouraging for newer participants. With handicap scoring, a team that's been playing for one month can realistically challenge a team that's been playing for a year. It keeps every table engaged right until the final question.

Points Breakdown

Teams earn base points from their finishing position each week. First place earns the most points, with diminishing returns down the leaderboard. Handicap points are then subtracted from the total, creating a 'net score' that determines the league standings.

Tips for Handicap League Players

  • Consistency beats occasional brilliance โ€” showing up every week matters
  • Even mid-table finishes earn points that add up over a season
  • New teams have a natural advantage early in the season
  • Check the leaderboard regularly on the Live Quizzing app

Ready to climb the leaderboard? Check the live standings on our app and see where your team stands this season.

Why Pub Quizzes Are Good For Your Brain

February 5, 2026

Pub quizzes are one of Ireland's favourite social traditions โ€” but did you know they're also genuinely good for your mental health and brain function? Here's what the science says about why quiz night is more than just fun.

It Exercises Your Memory

Recalling facts under pressure is one of the best workouts your hippocampus can get. The act of trying to remember โ€” even when you get it wrong โ€” strengthens neural pathways and improves memory retention over time.

It Reduces Stress

Socialising with friends in a fun, low-stakes environment has been shown to lower cortisol levels. The laughter and banter at a quiz night are as valuable to your wellbeing as a gym session.

It Keeps Your Brain Young

Cognitive engagement โ€” learning, recalling, problem-solving โ€” is one of the best defences against age-related cognitive decline. Regular trivia consumption is literally keeping your brain younger.

It Builds Social Bonds

Working as a team on a shared goal builds trust, communication, and a sense of belonging. Many of the closest friendships in Ireland have been forged over a heated debate about whether a dolphin is a mammal (it is).

It Expands Your Knowledge

Even the questions you get wrong teach you something new. Over a year of weekly quiz nights, you'll absorb an enormous amount of general knowledge almost without realising it.

It Encourages Healthy Competition

A little bit of competition is motivating and energising. The drive to do better next week keeps you engaged, curious, and coming back.

Bottom Line

The pub quiz is one of the most mentally stimulating social activities available โ€” and it comes with a pint. If that's not a perfect evening, we don't know what is.

Join Live Quizzing every week and give your brain the workout it deserves. Check out our upcoming events and book your spot today.

How to Host a Perfect Quiz Night: A Step-by-Step Guide

January 28, 2026

Thinking of hosting your own quiz night for a birthday, charity event, or corporate function? We've hosted hundreds of events across Ireland, and here's everything we've learned packed into one guide.

Step 1: Choose Your Format

Decide on the number of rounds (6โ€“8 is ideal), questions per round (5โ€“10), and whether you'll include picture rounds, music rounds, or a tie-breaker. Variety keeps energy high throughout the night.

Step 2: Set the Difficulty Curve

Start with easier questions to get people warmed up and confident. Gradually increase difficulty. Save your hardest round for round 5 or 6, then ease off slightly toward the end.

Step 3: Write Original Questions

Don't just pull questions from Google โ€” make them interesting, current, and relevant to your audience. Local knowledge rounds are always a hit at Irish events. Include questions about Irish history, geography, sport and culture.

Step 4: Prepare Answer Sheets

Print clean, clear answer sheets with team name, round numbers, and space for answers. Number them clearly to avoid confusion during marking.

Step 5: Set the Room Up Right

Tables should be far enough apart that teams can't overhear each other. Good lighting matters โ€” people need to write! A microphone is essential for groups over 30.

Step 6: Manage the Pace

Give teams enough time to discuss without letting the room go flat. A 45-second timer for questions keeps energy up. Play background music between rounds to maintain atmosphere.

Step 7: Make Marking Transparent

Have teams swap sheets for marking, or use a dedicated marker. Read answers clearly and fairly. Be consistent with what you accept as correct.

Step 8: Build to a Grand Finale

End with a dramatic scores reveal. Announce third, second, then first place with a pause between each. A small prize goes a long way in making the night memorable.

The Best Quiz Night Categories and How to Master Them

January 20, 2026

Every quiz has its signature rounds โ€” and knowing which categories come up most often is half the battle. Here's a breakdown of the most common pub quiz categories and how to sharpen your knowledge in each one.

Geography

Capitals, flags, rivers and mountain ranges โ€” geography is a staple of every good quiz. The best way to improve? Download a world geography app and do 5 minutes a day. Focus on African capitals and South American countries, as these trip people up most often.

History

Dates, battles, and famous figures. Irish history is a must-know for local quizzes. Brush up on key world events from the 20th century โ€” World War I & II, the Cold War, and major political movements come up constantly.

Science & Nature

Chemical elements, animal biology, and basic physics. You don't need a science degree โ€” just know your periodic table symbols for common elements, the planets in order, and which animals are mammals vs reptiles.

Pop Culture & Entertainment

This is where younger team members shine. Stay current on Netflix shows, chart music, and celebrity news. But don't neglect the classics โ€” questions about 90s films and TV are incredibly common.

Sports

GAA, Premier League, Rugby, and Olympics. In Ireland, knowing your GAA โ€” All-Ireland winners, star players, counties โ€” will give you a big edge. World Cup football history is also a perennial favourite.

Music

Artist names, song lyrics, album titles, and music history. Spotify wrapped tells you what you listen to โ€” diversify! Classical music, 60s rock, and Irish artists like U2 and The Coronas appear often.

Food & Drink

Cuisine origins, cocktail ingredients, cooking terms. This is a surprisingly rich category โ€” know your French cooking terms, classic cocktails, and which country famous dishes come from.

Literature

Book titles, authors, and famous characters. Classic Irish literature (Joyce, Beckett, Wilde) comes up regularly at Irish quizzes. Know the Booker Prize winners from the last decade too.

Build your team around these categories and you'll be climbing the Live Quizzing leaderboard in no time!
